Building a Gaming Computer

Slider 1Sometimes people wonder about how to build a gaming pc. A lot of gamers think it will probably be way too hard and take up too much time. The truth is as long as you buy the right components and have access to the internet you’re going to be okay. If you have a friend that has experience putting one together that’s even better. But if you don’t there are a ton of YouTube videos that help walk you through the process.

I built my first computer a year ago. It took me about 8 hours but I’m glad I did it. Now I get to brag that I put it together myself ;). I’m just kidding. It’s a lot more than that. Since I built it a year ago I’ve also upgraded it twice since. I got a new graphics card and power supply for it. Then I got a solid state hard drive so it would load programs faster. Because I put it together myself I knew exactly what to do to upgrade it. I know how most the parts work and how they need to be connected. I bet if I were to build another computer it would take me probably half the time. A big reason why it took so long is because I was scared I was going to break something and did extra research for everything before I tried something. The fact is most of the parts are really durable and you have to really mess something up to break one of them.

So maybe you are now interested in building a gaming computer. Probably the first thing you need to decide is how much money you are going to spend. You probably at least want to spend around $1000. But if you have less you will just have to make some hard decisions and realize you won’t be able to play everything on max settings. Next there are some helpful websites like PC part picker and Amazon has people who put up their builds. Find something in your price range.

If you want to pick out everything yourself it’s going to take a bit more time and research. Make sure everything is compatible before you make your final purchases. Here is what you are going to need:

  1. Storage: you’re going to need a place to store your files, music, games, videos and all that stuff, so this is an important part.
  2. Graphics Card: you want something better than the integrated graphics and this is like one of the most important things to consider spending a lot of money on.
  3. Processor: this is the workhorse of the computer you’ve probably heard of AMD and Intel CPUS.
  4. Power Supply: estimate the total wattage your computer will need then buy a power supply that’s above that amount.
  5. Motherboard: this is like the nexus hub of all the parts. It allows everything to communicate with each other.
  6. Memory: this is like how many things your computer will be able to keep track of at once. If you like to have a lot of stuff open at the same time you need a lot of memory.
  7. Case: there are a lot of cases out there. As long as you get one that can hold all your parts and maybe future upgrades you’ll be okay. Other than that just pick a style you like.

So that’s about it 7 parts and you’re ready to start building. For the rest of this post I’ll just add a few links and a video to help get you going.

Review of Gaming Chairs

Not a lot of people have heard of X Rocker gaming chairs. Most people just sit on their couches or on the ground or pull up a kitchen chair. That’s great and all, but it’s not as good as these gaming chairs. After a couple hours I get uncomfortable with other options. These gaming chairs are designed to game and have sound in the headrest. It makes gaming that much more fun when you feel like you are surrounded by the game.

For awhile my friends and I would use bean bag chairs to game in front of the TV with. That all changed when I got a gaming chair for Christmas. The first gaming chair I got was the X Rocker Pulse. It’s a really great chair, it is comfortable to play games for hours in. If you hook up the speakers you’ll also be able to enjoy the sound. It has two speakers in the head rest and a subwoofer. The bass is pretty powerful. You can also flip up the arms if they get in your way. It’s not too heavy, and you can move it around pretty easy. Sometimes I’ll move it into my room to hang out there. I liked this one so much I got a second one called the X Rocker Ice Game chair. It is pretty much the same thing it just looks a lot cooler. Now when I have friends over the losers get the bean bag chairs and the winners get the X Rockers.

GTA V Review

GTA V for the most part I think blew away people’s expectations. Most people thought it was going to be good, but not this good. Rockstar made a huge sandbox world, improved multi-player, and made a kick ass campaign. That’s not even to mention the graphics. If you are playing on console obviously performance not a factor but if you are on PC make sure to get a good system to really experience this game. I play it on the Playstation 4 and I love it. Even my big brother plays the game and likes it too.

The best part of this game is how you feel like you are part of the world. The missions immerse you into it. When someone is yelling with you against the other gang you feel like that computer controlled character is on your side. I think the best part is you feel like a bad ass criminal. The city of Los Santos is pretty cool with a ton of stuff to do. There is enough detail to go exploring for hours and just look at stuff. Of course that is not as much fun as blowing things up and creating havoc but I’m just saying it’s that nice looking of a game. One of my friends has a 1440p monitor and a really nice gaming computer and the game looks even better. In this post I included a screen shot of the beach.

The online part of the game is fun too. You can have up to 30 players and pretty much everyone just kills each other. It is complete chaos most of the time. There are also things like street races and joint missions. You basically save up enough money to buy nice cars, apartments, and stuff like that. One thing I hope they do is add more stuff to do in online mode. Once you buy all the best stuff the only really fun thing left to do is some of the missions and driving around killing other people.

Some PC Gaming Accessories to look at

There are a few must have accessories for PC gamers. Just those little things that make life easier or make the game you are playing just a tad bit more enjoyable. This can range from a near necessity such as a good mouse all the way down to a large specially designed mousepad. I’ve spent ridiculous amounts of money on gaming equipment because I either see someone else using it or for a bunch of other reasons. Maybe at the time I’m just bored and have a hole to burn in my pocket.

In this post I’m going to look at a few accessories most people don’t really think about.

PC Gaming Controller

I think this is a big one for a lot of people. I also know a lot of gamers pledge only to stick with the mouse and keyboard because they are superior and all that jazz. I agree for the most part but there are certain types of games that frankly need a controller or you are going to rage quit. Take for example Super Meatboy. It is so much easier to beat that game with a controller.

Another reason I feel people get a controller for pc games is because they are coming from a console platform. If you’ve been a diehard console gamer for a while sometimes it’s too hard to make the switch. Eventually in some games they will hang up their controller and use the keyboard and mouse but for any game they can they will probably use a controller.

I think the best pc gaming controller is Playstation’s dual shock 4. That’s right, it’s actually the console controllers that are probably the best for pc gaming too. A lot of the designs of specifically built “pc controllers” are based off the design of the console controllers anyway.

Headphone Stand

You probably have never thought about this. But ever since I got one my desk stays a lot more organized. There’s already enough crap and cords on it. When I have a designated spot for my headset it becomes habit to hang it up after each time I’m done playing.

I don’t know about you but my headset cost over $100. I want to take care of it because to me that’s a lot of money. Before I got a stand it would sometimes end up on the floor. If I were to step on it the wrong way there would go my $100. So that’s another helpful thing about the stand it will help keep your headset safe.

They also look pretty cool too. Look at this one that Razer makes.

Gaming Eyewear

If you watch pro gamers stream and stuff you’ve probably seen at least one of them wearing gaming glasses. They look pretty nerdy but I got some and I noticed a difference. There’s some days during the summer I spend all day in front of my monitor. Sometimes towards the end of the day, my eyes would start to hurt from the strain and focus. These helped reduce that feeling.

If you already wear a prescription pair of glasses then you can get Gunnars that also help your vision. Also they have come out with some pairs that actually look good. Even if you don’t like the look of them who’s going to care when you are at home playing video games on your computer.
